"SMS etiquette becomes more important than ever in today's mobile culture,"Lifestyle Coach Jaya Jaya Myrasays hurry. “How and when you text someone will definitely affect how they feel about you and even how they choose to interact with you. From business to family to relationships, you're going to be texting at some point, so it's best to know proper etiquette for all of these different scenarios."
A big part of maintaining good relationships with people is communication, and that includes how you behave on your cell phone. Sometimes it's about losing your phone and deciding to talk face to face. To make sure you don't upset anyone or possibly hurt yourself, here are 13 things to keep in mind.
1
Giving someone bad news about their health
"While it can be tempting to avoid talking, it's never a good idea to text bad health news," says Myra. "It doesn't give the person a chance to fully process the information and can make it seem like you don't care about their feelings." As hard as it is, it's best to make time for a real conversation when it comes to news about her well-being.
2
Break with someone
This shouldn't come as a surprise, but avoid breaking up with someone over text. "It took a long time to build a relationship," says Myra. "If you want things to end amicably, never end with text messages." Keep the conversation face-to-face as long as the relationship is not toxic or abusive and it is safe to do so. This is how your partner can heal properly.
3
bring up an old argument
While you should generally avoid intentionally dragging old issues around, it's a big taboo, especially around text. "You're not just bringing up old stuff, you're doing it in a passive-aggressive way that prevents anyone from reacting in a meaningful way," Myra says. "With lyrics, things get constantly misconstrued because there's no tone of voice or body language to assess them, making lyrics the worst way to tackle an age-old problem."
4
send passwords
Sending a password may seem harmless, but it can easily fall into the wrong hands. "You never know who's looking at someone's phone or browsing someone's text messages, so texting passwords is never a good idea," Myra says. “Also, a phone is much easier to hack than you might think, making any text message vulnerable to theft. And let's not forget that people lose their phones and, in some cases, have them stolen."
5
Send unwanted sexual photos
You definitely want to make sure the person you're receiving is okay with what you're sending, especially if it's sexual in nature. "Unwanted sexual advances happen all too often," says Tara Struyk, co-founder and editor-in-chief ofPervertsays hurry. This can include unwanted nude photos, unwarranted sexts, and ongoing sexual conversations and requests when the person has not shown interest. "Whether you're texting or talking in person, the rules are the same: be respectful, respect other people's boundaries, and most importantly, find out if anyone is receptive to your advances before you make them." says struyk.
6
Complain about your workplace
Everyone needs to vent about their work sometimes, but be careful when expressing your negative feelings in a text, especially to a coworker. "Friends (especially colleagues) can quickly become enemies and your job could be at risk if these text messages are shared with the wrong people."Internet Safety Family Lawyer Sues Scheffsays hurry. "If you're having a bad day at work, consider joining your non-technical friend or colleague for a whine-and-wine session—no device."
7
announce a death
Hearing that someone has died is never good, but when you announce it via text, you have no idea where that person is or what they're doing when you receive it. "This situation needs to be handled carefully and not through text messages."Etiquette Specialist Jacquelyn Youstsays hurry. "You run the risk of appearing cold and distant."
8
Dealing with work related issues
Confronting a problem with a coworker or your boss is stressful, but hiding behind your phone is not the way to go. "Take care of work-related issues yourself," Youst says. "You don't want to burn any bridges in your career."
9
spread gossip
Sometimes It's hard to ignore the instinct to text your group chat about the scandalous news you just heard, but avoid spreading information about others so easily through text messages. "It's never a good idea because it's so easy to take a screenshot or message someone," says Myra. "The last thing you want is hard evidence that your negative gossip is getting to the wrong people."
10
negotiate deals
"Business negotiation is subtle and delicate and not suitable for texting," says Myra. “Face-to-face interactions are necessary to build trust and trust, and you won't be able to do that over text. In fact, texting about business matters will make you seem very unprofessional.” Instead, talk face to face and put what you discussed into a written contract.
11
announce pregnancy
Telling someone you're pregnant is a big deal, whether you're telling the dad or just breaking the news to family and friends. "Breaking the news of a new baby has to be personal," says Youst. "Take advantage of the opportunity to share the good news face to face and use your words and body language to show joy."
12
Say "I love you" for the first time.
Saying you love someone for the first time is a great moment and you shouldn't take it for granted. "You're never taken seriously when you convey something so emotional and sentimental in an emotionless text," says Myra. Use face-to-face conversation to convey the depth of your emotions, and be open with your partner about it. Nothing is more stressful than waiting for a response to a message like this.
13
a big apology
"If you want to make things right, apologize in person, admit your mistakes, and have a plan of action to make things right," says Myra. "Everyone handles apologies differently and it takes different things to make the apology seem sincere. It's one thing if you try to apologize in a text, you'll never get that feeling out of your partner. In fact, your apparent lack of care and sincerity can make your problem worse.
Texting is one of the easiest ways to communicate and is definitely effective for lighter conversations. But save the heavier topics for personal matters – some things are meant to be said face to face.
